GE’s ‘wired’ blog

Posted on September 30, 2006 by Roland

In a short article, the National Association of Manufacturers reports that General Electric (GE) has opened a new blog. What is more interesting is that GE has teamed with WIRED and its annual NextFest event being held in New York this weekend. So I’ve looked for you at bloggingNEXT, the new GE blog. Read my impressions…

At first glance, it looks like a strange alliance: GE, a company with a $364 billion market capitalization and annual sales of $149 billion, has teamed up with WIRED, which belongs to the Condé Nast publishing group, to promote the WIRED NextFest.

But let’s look at how WIRED introduces the concept for this event: “This fall, WIRED Magazine is bringing its vision of a new world’s fair to New York City. Experience more than 130 exciting exhibits from scientists, researchers, and inventors around the globe. WIRED NextFest features innovations in communication, design, entertainment, exploration, health, transportation, security, and green living.”

Clearly, GE is working in many of these areas. So a GE blog about NextFest makes sense and is a good ‘promotional’ tool. Let’s look at this blog.

As you can read on this post, bloggingNEXT will be written by 15 authors coming from various divisions of GE, with a large majority involved in marketing communications.

Does this mean that bloggingNEXT is a new marketing vehicle for GE? The answer is a clear “No” according to “GE is WIRED!,” the first post which appeared on September 27.

We don’t want it to be a commercial for GE. We are not going to spend this week talking about how great our exhibits are or the fastest route from the entry point to the GE pavilion. NEXTFEST is a tribute to technology and creative thinking. We believe in that and GE and salute it in others. Our hope is to seek out the best; document and share it with you here. Consider us your eyes and ears at NEXTFEST this week.

There are now 25 posts on this new blog, with subjects going from prosthetic legs to space trips. And you can comment on all these posts without a need for registration.

Overall, this is a fine blog, but what will happen to it when NextFest is over? Will it continue or will it stop? I haven’t found the information, so drop me a note if you know more about the future of bloggingNEXT.

Finally, if you want to see what will be shown this weekend during WIRED NextFest, Wired News offers a photo gallery of many inventions on display such as lifelike robots, homes of the future and immersive games.

Bloggers earn more than journalists

Posted on September 28, 2006 by Roland

This is the surprising conclusion — at least for me — of a new salary search tool launched by Indeed, a company which focuses on online job search. In “Indeed Launches Salary Search,” Erick Schonfeld reports that “job listings for bloggers advertise higher salaries than those for either journalists or reporters.” Obviously I was intrigued and I decided to look at the beta version of this tool. Read my analysis…

Let’s start with a little background about the company. “Indeed, Inc. was founded in 2004 with the aim of radically improving online job search.” And it started its accompanying blog, Blog Indeed, in November 2004. You can read some details about its new salary search tool in this post.

You can see below a comparison for the salaries offered to bloggers, journalists and reporters in the U.S. (Credit: Query result from Indeed). This clearly indicates than bloggers can make more money than journalists or reporters.

Bloggers, journalists and reporters (query 1)

A graph is nice, but what it is based upon? I decided to go further and here are the results. Indeed has today offers for 226 blogger jobs, 1,225 journalist jobs and 4,973 reporter jobs.

These numbers are not huge, especially for bloggers. So I decided to return to the salary search tool and to select some states.

Here are blogger salaries in California, journalist salaries in New York, and reporter salaries in Washington (Credit: Query result from Indeed).

Bloggers, journalists and reporters (query 2)

I moved to other states and here are blogger salaries in Alabama, journalist salaries in District of Columbia, and reporter salaries in Massachusetts (Credit: Query result from Indeed).

Bloggers, journalists and reporters (query 3)

As you can see, a blogger in Alabama will earn less than a reporter in Massachusetts. But with 226 positions for bloggers in the U.S., how many are available in Alabama? Probably very few. In other words, this salary search tool is easy to use, but needs to use a larger database to become really useful for bloggers.

What do you think of this salary search tool — which might be more useful for other categories of workers? And more importantly, does this reflect your experience as a blogger? Have you been offered a (well) paid job? Please share your experience here.

Should executives and CEOs blog?

Posted on September 25, 2006 by Roland

I’m sure you think my answer to this question is yes. But this is not that simple. If you’re the owner of a small company, there should be no problem. And if you work for a private company not involved in heavily regulated sectors, such as the pharmaceutical or defense industries, I think you also can blog. But if you work for a public company, things are becoming more complex. As an executive, you need to comply with financial regulations and your legal staff. So what to do? Read my analysis

So, let’s first look at an article from Shel Holtz about Blogging and the Role of the CEO. He starts by quoting Dave Taylor and his Leadership for the 21st Century blog. Dave Taylor says that a CEO has to make money, so it’s not his role to write a blog. [Note: even if Taylor’s posts are often interesting, I hate the look-and-feel of his various sites; you can’t simply scroll through his pages; they’re re-displayed all the time; highly irritating!]

Anyway, Holtz disagrees — and so do I — writing that an even more important role of a CEO is to communicate effectively about his company. Here is a short quote.

A blog is merely one tool a CEO can use to communicate, if it suits his or her style, the nature of the company’s audiences, and the issues the organization faces. Blogging is a new tool a CEO can opt to use for some of his communication responsibilities, replacing time he formerly spent using less effective channels. In total, though, he need spend no more time communicating today than before blogs emerged.

In the first paragraph, I also mention financial regulations. Holtz is more optimistic than me on this point.

Nobody — not the CEO, not a front-line employee — should ever blog anything that violates regulations. A GM employee told me that Lutz does not allow company lawyers to review his posts, asserting that as Vice Chairman, he already knows what he can and cannot say in public. The fact that he is writing a blog and not, for example, giving a TV news interview, does not diminish his ability to know the difference. Fastlane has never caused GM any regulatory problems.

So, if you’re a CEO or an executive, are you now convinced that you can blog, and that the advantages are outstripping the risks?

If you think time has come, here is a link to Kari White’s seven tips for corporate blogging, which circulated widely this summer. Here are some of the most important ones.

  • Pay attention to legal issues
  • Be sure to craft a blogging policy
  • Avoid the sales or marketing pitches
  • And encourage your employees to blog

You’ll find an extended version of White’s tips at the British Association of Communicators in Business (CiB) website.

And remember that if you have not the time — or writing talents — to animate a blog, you still can outsource it to a professional blogger.

Measuring your blog rank

Posted on September 22, 2006 by Roland

There are many ways to evaluate the popularity of your blog. You can look at the Google PageRank (read more), the Technorati rank (read more) or at the number of readers of your feeds at FeedBurner or Bloglines. Or you can visit Bloginfluence.net which mixes several of these metrics to give you a unique number which is supposed to reflect your ‘blog influence.’ Like any metrics, this one needs to be looked at with a grain of salt. Read my analysis…

BlogInfluence.net is the result of the work of Julio Gorka, who used various APIs and a formula he devised himself. Here is the formula he’s using to give you the ‘influence number’ of your blog: [(blog+posts+web links) + (bloglines subs * 2)] * 1+(PageRank/10).

Below is a table showing the ‘blog influence numbers’ for three of my blogs, including this one. For comparison, I also put the results for “GM FastLane Blog,” a widely known corporate blog, and for “Smart Mobs,” a group blog where I’m one of the editors.

Blog name Age (months) Google PageRank Technorati Rank Sites linking to this blog Blog Influence number
ZDNet’s Emerging Technology Trends (ETT) 13 7/10 2,886 616 368607.6
Roland Piquepaille’s Technology Trends (TT) 54 7/10 7,663 300 93845.1
Blogs for Companies (BFC) 6 6/10 31,692 84 5635.2
GM FastLane Blog (FL) 21 7/10 2,568 675 115117.2
Smart Mobs (SM) 58 7/10 1,134 1,104 691446.1

What can we learn from this small sample of blogs?

  • Google PageRank doesn’t measure your blog’s popularity, but evaluates its relationship with the blogosphere. So all the blogs in this sample have almost the same PageRank values.
  • The Technorati rank of FL is much higher than the one of TT, but their ‘blog influence’ numbers are almost similar. Why that? Probably because TT is older and contains more posts.
  • There are only 64% more sites having linking to SM than FL, but SM’s influence is 6 times larger than FL. Why? Probably because SM contains about six new posts per day.
  • The Technorati ranks of ETT and FL are almost the same, but the ‘blog influence’ number of ETT is 3 times the one of FL. Why that? I really don’t know.

As you can see, you can use various numbers to show other people how your blog is popular or influential.

Finally, in Blog Equivalence of Page Rank, WebProNews adds that “a few more metrics added to [Bloginfluence.net] formula which would help strengthen its value.” For example, WebProNews says that Yahoo and Google News links should be incorporated in the formula (for authority) as well as FeedBurner subscribers (for readership).

What do you think of this ‘blog influence’ number? What is yours? Drop me a note.

Outsourcing your company blog

Posted on September 18, 2006 by Roland

Imagine that your company wants to start a business blog. But who will write the contents? Who will answer comments and build the community? Maybe a member of your staff can do it. But chances are that she has already too much work. And does he write well? Can she find new ideas for daily posts? Is there another solution to build a better blog? You bet. Simply, as reports WebProNews in “Professional Blogging: Effective Outsourcing,” just hire a professional blogger. But read more…

But what is professional blogging?

Professional blogging, as a paid writer for other blogs, has a very bright future. Writing blog posts for other blogs is truly a win-win situation for everyone involved.

The professional blogger gets paid to post, and the blog owner has postings magically appear at predetermined intervals. This is especially true for the growing number of company business blogs that appear almost daily.

Of course, it will cost you — slightly — more money that if some of your employees were writing the blog. But with all the other things they have to do, who knows if there will be a good post tomorrow?

And you’ll probably be rewarded sooner than you think by hiring someone not working for your organization.

A business blog increases company revenue over time through the marketing and relationship building power of the blog. As a result of the additional financial gains, hiring a professional blog writer or team makes financial sense for many business owners and managers. The fees charges by the blogging professional could be much less than the added revenue, the cost of hiring an additional staff member for blogging, or from the time saving from not reassigning blogging duties to a current staff member.

And don’t forget that a professional blogger can do many other things, such as relieve you from the technical aspects of blogging — yes, they exist — or train your staff to maintain the blog in the future. Still, outsourcing at least the initial steps of your blog is certainly a wise solution.

Business phone conferences are common occurrences. Learn how to get free conference calling plans and additional conference call services from this phone service site today.

In addition to what writes WebProNews, there are some other things to consider. First, you need to find a professional blogger who understands your business and can use the language of your industry. And second, you need to find one in the first place.

For example, in France, I don’t know many professional bloggers. There is Sophie Kune who writes Vous les hommes for Celio, a French-based chain of men’s apparel. Of course, I’m also writing Emerging Technology Trends for ZDNet.com, part of CNET Networks, Inc.

There are obviously lots of PR or ad agencies that can help you. But without starting a polemic, these agencies can only build blogs serving as sales assistants, not the ones you’re dreaming of and that will lead your customers to talk with you.

So if you want to build a successful company blog, hire a professional blogger. Or simply contact me.

Blogging from space

Posted on September 16, 2006 by Roland

Anousheh AnsariI bet that many of you envy Anousheh Ansari, an American businesswoman born in Iran, who will become the first female space tourist on September 18. As the previous male ones, Ansari had to pay about $20 million for 10 days in space. After a trip in a Soyuz spacecraft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, she will spend some time inside the International Space Station (ISS). But what will she do on the ISS? She’ll become the first person to blog from space and tell us her thoughts from far above us. Read more…

In fact, she started her space blog on September 12. Here is what she wrote in her first post, “The Road to Baikonur.”

This is the first blog I have ever written. I’m usually a private person, but with what has happened in my life, I feel an obligation to share this experience with everyone out there.

And she also tells us why she wanted to do this travel in space.

A long, long time ago, in a country far, far away… there was a young girl who had her eyes fixed on the twinkling stars of the night skies over Tehran. Back then the air was not so polluted and you could see many stars in the night skies. Summer time, when they would set up the beds outside on the balcony to sleep, she would lay in her bed and look deep into the mysterious darkness of the universe and think to herself, What’s out there? Is someone out there awake in her bed, and gazing at her in the night sky? Will she ever find her… See her… Will she fly out there and float in the wonderful, boundless freedom of space?

Of course, almost everyone is also dreaming about traveling in space. But Ansari will do it and tell her what’s happening from miles above…

In another post, she simply said, “What is the price of a dream…? For me, it is putting my life and my money where my mouth is.”

Ansareh, have a nice and safe trip! And don’t spend too much time blogging from space!

[Additional note: there are thousands of articles about Ansari’s trip. Here is a background, “Iranian-born woman to be space tourist” (David Koenig, Associated Press, September 16, 2006).]

Replacing a website by a blog

Posted on September 14, 2006 by Roland

Many individuals have abandoned their static websites to publish blogs. And some small companies did the same thing to improve their relationship with their customers — and to reduce their costs. But they rarely issued a press release to tell the world why they switched to blogs. Now, Three Advertising, a company based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has recreated its website as an advertising and marketing blog. Let’s look at this new blog…

Surprisingly, this press release doesn’t appear on the new ‘3′ website/blog. But after all, there is no search box…

So let’s look at two short excerpts from this press release to discover how this company decide to switch from a conventional website to a blog.

“Blogs are nothing new, especially for private individuals and their sites. But what we wanted to do was make sure our site was not a typical professional service site that is static or rarely updated,” says Chris Moore, strategic director and partner for the agency. “The blog format allows us to build a body of information designed to help anyone interested in advertising, branding and design.”

“Rather than just create another advertising agency site focused on itself, we thought we would write about things we’ve learned and ask users to share their experiences as well,” adds Sam Maclay, creative director and partner at the agency. […] “A company website is a chance to have an ongoing dialogue with the people in your business, including clients, potential clients and even potential employees.”

Personally, I think this site/blog has been poorly designed and doesn’t achieve the goals claimed in the press release.

For example, on the home page, you only can see the last note published. You need to click on the “Blog” link on the home page or on the “Archive” link on the blog page to get access to previous posts.

In other words, it’s probably a good thing for a small business to replace its website by a blog. But it needs to be done nicely — and professionally. In this case, which apparently attracted very few comments, that was not the case.

Do you think I’m too harsh with this ad company? Please let me know.

An energetic blog from Owens Corning

Posted on September 11, 2006 by Roland

Last month, Owens Corning, a company which provides materials to the wind energy market, opened a corporate blog “for designers, engineers other professionals who work with composite materials in the field of wind energy.” After four weeks, this Wind Blade Technology blog still doesn’t contain a single comment. Why is that?

Let’s start with a little bit of history. Owens Corning provides building materials systems and composites systems since 1938. And it is operated under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code since October 2000. The company says it was forced to seek Chapter 11 protection because of the explosion of asbestos litigation. Today, Owens Corning has about 20,000 employees and annual sales of $6.65 billion.

The company opened its first blog, the Pink Panther Energy blog in April 2006. Here is the introduction of the first post on this blog, “Hello! Anyone out there interested in energy?

This is a new blog dedicated to all things energy. I am just getting started and this is my first post so be patient with me. My goal is to create a place where people interested in energy can go for information, news and fun. I plan to link to interesting tidbits about energy and help find answers to questions about how we can all save energy.

The author of this blog, the Pink Panther itself, has published plenty of notes since the first one, but apparently didn’t allow comments.

In August, Owens Corning decided to go further and opened a new blog focused on the wind energy market, Wind Blade Technology. Here is the goal of this blog as stated in this first post published on August 19, 2006.

This blog is for designers, engineers other professionals who work with composite materials in the field of wind energy. The wind energy market is growing rapidly and we think it will help to have a way of exchanging information and ideas among the technical people who are making that growth possible.

This first post also says that the blog will be written by six employees of the company, living in Belgium, Brazil, Spain and in the USA.

We all work for Owens Corning so the blog will undoubtedly have an Owens Corning bias. As a leading supplier of glass fiber reinforcement materials to the wind energy market, Owens Corning has a vested interest in its growth and is therefore supporting our efforts to launch this blog. Having said all of that, our objective is to share information and learn from each other with the ultimate goal of advancing the wind energy market.

And the authors added that they were welcoming comments, suggestions and questions.

After four weeks, this blog contains 10 posts and not a single comment. And Technorati doesn’t find a single post linking to it. Why is that?

Personally, I think this blog is professionally done and that it should attract readers. Is the focus of wind energy too narrow? Is it possible that readers think the writers’ opinions are too biased? What do you think of this corporate blog? Drop me a note and tell me what you think.

RSS for companies

Posted on September 6, 2006 by Roland

You probably are using RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds today to discover what is new on a site or a blog. But RSS technology, like blogs, can be used by companies in various situations. RSS feeds can be used internally or externally to improve business processes, as reports the editorial of the latest issue of CIO Magazine. This article gives some details about how real companies use RSS to complement — or even replace — their e-mail systems. Some are using RSS feeds to increase employee satisfaction or to improve the way they provide information to their customers. Still, deployments are not so easy and require some hard customization work. But read more…

For those of you who want to refresh their memory about what RSS means (Really Simple Syndication? Rich Site Summary? RDF Site Summary?), I suggest you read this Wikipedia article which will tell you what you need to know about the various ’standards’ — or implementations — of RSS.

Let’s start with a first example of how RSS can be used inside a company.

Ross Szalay, IS director for the law firm Dykema, took the internal approach to turbocharge the firm’s ability to monitor current cases. For example, an attorney in charge of a specific client account gets a regular feed of all specific efforts undertaken by other attorneys for the client, so there’s a unified view of the services the client is getting — and needs to be billed for.

But RSS feeds also can be used to provide critical information to customers.

At Jets International, which provides a matching service between private-plane operators with unused seating capacity and executives who need a flight, the emphasis of RSS is external, to keep suppliers and customers up to date on available flights and customer requests, according to Nate McKelvey, who serves as both CEO and CIO of the company. Plane operators have a custom RSS reader that keeps them updated on customer requests that match the available seating.

If these deployments are useful and successful, don’t underestimate the amount of work needed to create a real world business application.

Because it isn’t yet clear how RSS will be used and where, CIOs are finding that they need to do a fair amount of custom configuring of the few tools available to meet their particular organizations’ needs.

In McKelvey’s case, he had to write a custom reader for his 350 suppliers of seats on private planes because it would have been too difficult, he judged, for his suppliers to configure a generic RSS reader themselves. The complex configuration has caused him to hold off on delivering RSS feeds to the company’s several thousand customers: “I’ll deploy it to them when there’s no configuration to support,” he says.

And how can you evaluate the ROI of such RSS-based tools? It’s not always easy, because they just provide easier ways to manage information. But every employee or customer will benefit from these tools, which don’t cost that much. “Dykema’s Szalay agrees the cost is small, in the low tens of thousands of dollars.”

Are you ready to build new business applications based on RSS technology? Have you already deployed successful ones? Drop me a note.

BT starts a blog for its business users

Posted on September 3, 2006 by Roland

In a short note, IT Week reports that BT offers advice via blog. With this new blog, the UK telecommunications giant “aims to cover topics including web site design, how to reach customers online, and network security.” And as said David Morgan, head of online business services, BT wanted to start a conversation with its customers to better understand what is important to them. I’ve read the contents of this blog, which started on August 9, and I think that BT is doing a good job. But read more…

BT Business blogLet’s start with an excerpt of the welcome note of the BT Business blog.

We’ll write about what you can do through your BT internet connection to benefit your business. We’ll mention our products only when they’re relevant and show you how to make the most of those you’ve already bought, but it’s not going to be one big sales pitch - we’ll also write about things completely unrelated to BT that we think will be useful to your business.

This first post received seven comments which triggered three answers by BT. And all the answers are clearly labeled with a small BT logo. Pretty clever…

Since the beginning, 16 notes were posted. And clearly, all the subjects are not related to BT, such as notes commenting on the travel alerts on UK flights or the Dell and Apple recalls of 6 million laptops.

Other posts are more related to BT broadband services, such as “BT launches broadband guide for business,” which attracted no comments on August 16, 2006.

But some other notes are worth mentioning, such as “Adding moving images to your website” (August 16, 2006) or “What is a blog anyway?” (August 30, 2006).

It remains to be seen if BT will start a blog for home users of its broadband services.
